A CBS polling expert told “CBS Mornings” host Nate Burleson Monday that poll respondents were blaming Democrats for the state of the economy.

“Two-thirds of people say it is getting worse. Let me show you why. One of the ways people interact with the economy is gas prices. You’re paying more,” Anthony Salvanto said. “Back in August, there was some optimism. The majority said, okay, they’re going down. Look at this — now, 63% say gas prices are going up in their area. So I asked people, okay, let’s turn to politics. Who do you blame for this, what’s the reason? Well, look, there’s more folks now who say the Democratic policies have harmed the economy than helped it.” (RELATED: ‘Biggest Advantage’: MSNBC Polling Guru Breaks Down How Republicans Could Win Big In Midterms)

The Consumer Price Index rose 8.2% year-to-year in September, following increases of 8.3% in August, 8.5% in July, 9.1% in June and 8.6% in May. Some experts, including American Petroleum Institute (API) President and CEO Mike Sommers and Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) COO Jeff Eshelman, have claimed that President Joe Biden’s hostility to the production of fossil fuels helped send energy prices higher.

“They’re reasoning out of results. They’re feeling the pinch, parties in power, okay, must be doing something wrong,” Salvanto continued. “By contrast they think Republican policies more likely would help. They’re not in power, that’s how they think.”

Salvanto said that while Democrats’ abortion stance has helped the party, it was not in the top six issues considered important by voters, according to a display, while the economy and inflation were the top two. Salvanto also noted that young voters were not as likely to vote.

“That’s a big difference because the younger people are part of the Democratic base,” Salvanto said. “If they don’t show up, hurts Democrats’ chances.”

“Younger people, get out and vote,” Burleson said in response. “It’s important.”
