White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre celebrated the election of the first transgender candidate to the New Hampshire state legislature at Friday’s briefing.

Jean-Pierre said the election of Democratic state representative-elect James Roesener, a biological female, to represent the state’s 22nd state House District, Ward 8, is emblematic of the U.S. following the midterm elections.

“The president takes pride in making sure that his administration looks like America,” she said. “And now that we have a little clearer picture of last week’s election results, we wanted to highlight how Americans turned out to elect a number, a few, diverse and historic public servants to represent them at every level of government … in New Hampshire, James Roesener is the first trans-man elected to a state legislature.”

She also noted the election of the Democratic Florida Representative-elect Maxwell Frost, a 25-year-old who will be the first member of Generation Z to be elected to Congress. She celebrated the elections of the nation’s first openly lesbian governors, Democratic Massachusetts Governor-elect Maura Healey and Democratic Oregon Governor-elect Tina Kotek. She named Democratic Maryland Governor-elect Wes Moore, who will be the first black governor of the state.

Jean-Pierre touted her own sexuality, race and immigration status when she assumed her role following the departure of former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki in May, who left to pursue a position at MSNBC. Jean-Pierre raises a daughter with her partner, Suzanne Malveaux, a CNN National Correspondent.
