Gunshots erupted at a high school basketball game Tuesday in Del City, Oklahoma, and cameras captured the chaotic scene as it unfolded.

More than 500 people attended the game between Del City High School and Millwood High School at the John Smith Fieldhouse, local news outlet KOCO ABC 5 reported. Police were on-scene for the game and quickly began to evacuate the area after sounds of gunfire erupted throughout the gym.

Video footage of the shooting captured the chaos as students ran for cover. The broadcasters managed a final announcement to fans before ducking to take cover under their table.

After several moments they peered over the table, seemingly in a state of confusion as they assessed the chaos. Students with worried faces can be seen running in front of the camera in a desperate attempt to flee the gym.

Local authorities are investigating both the inside and the outside of the gym as they attempt to establish a motive for the shooting. Meanwhile, school officials have suggested that the shooting stemmed from a fight, according to KOCO ABC 5 News. Major Brad Cowden of the Del City Police Department released a statement about the horrifying incident. “We are still in the preliminary stages. We are reviewing surveillance video from inside the building,” Cowden said.

“It’s going to take quite a while to go through all that information. Right now, we are just trying to preserve as much evidence as we can with the weather,” he said, according to KOCO ABC 5 News.
