POLL: Most Americans Support Recruiting Private Citizens To Help Secure The Border

The majority of likely voters in the general election support governors calling on private citizens to help secure the southern border, according to a new poll from Convention of States Action and The Trafalgar Group.

More than 51% of general election likely voters support states recruiting citizens to combat the border crisis, according to the poll. The findings come during a massive surge in illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, where migrant encounters have been breaking new records. More than 72% of likely general election Republican voters and more than 19% of likely general election Democratic voters said they would support their state recruiting private citizen volunteers to help enforce border security.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recorded more than 2.3 million encounters in fiscal year 2022 and more than 250,000 in December alone.

In response to the influx, many governors have taken it upon themselves to increase border security. Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott launched Operation Lone Star in March 2021 to surge state law enforcement resources to the Texas-Mexico border.

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also took matters into his own hands and sent two flights of illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard in September. Abbott has also transported illegal immigrants to Democratic-run cities, such as Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia.

“Washington, D.C. elites–and their friends in the global business, Hollywood, and Silicon Valley establishment worlds–are completely disconnected from the American people and the reality that goes on around them daily. Governor DeSantis sent some illegal aliens up to Martha’s Vineyard last year to make exactly that point. The border crisis is real, it’s urgent, and it presents a potential danger to every family in this country. President Biden finally showed up to take a look at a highly sanitized area of the Southern Border so we have the impression he finally cares, but absolutely nothing has changed, nor will it,” Mark Meckler, President of Convention of States, said in a statement shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The poll surveyed over 1,000 general election likely voters between Jan. 9 and 12. It had a 2.9% margin of error.
