Republican Texas Rep. Chip Roy introduced legislation Thursday that would honor Dr. Li Wenliang, the Wuhan doctor who tried to alert the world about COVID-19 before he was silenced by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

The Daily Caller first obtained the legislation, which is titled the Dr. Li Wenliang Congressional Gold Medal Act. The legislation would honor Dr. Li Wenliang and award him with Congress’s highest civilian award.

Dr. Li Wenliang was a 34-year-old doctor who worked at the hospital in Wuhan, China, where the virus originated. He was was one of the first to be exposed to COVID-19. Li Wenliang continued to work at the Wuhan Central Hospital, despite the outbreak, and died Feb. 6 after contracting COVID-19.

Before his death, he stated, “If the officials had disclosed information about epidemic earlier, I think it would have been a lot better. There should be more openness and transparency.” (RELATED: The Chinese Doctor Who Warned About Coronavirus Outbreak Is Dead)

“Dr. Li Wenliang is a modern symbol of freedom in the face of tyranny, censorship, and oppression. Churchill famously said, ‘The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is;’ Dr. Li’s life and death are testaments to this, which is why Congress should honor this courageous Wuhan doctor and whistleblower with the Congressional Gold Medal,” Roy told the Caller before introducing the legislation. (RELATED: Coronavirus Pandemic ‘Most Likely’ Originated In Wuhan Lab, Covered Up By CCP, According To New Senate Report)

Roy originally introduced a version of this legislation in 2020.
