A North Carolina man stands accused of trying to brutally murder his date “for the thrill” before she managed to escape Wednesday.

A woman called Rowan County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday claiming that a man locked her in his home and attacked her with a knife after the pair went on a date, according to Fox Carolina. The pair met earlier in the day after the man — 24-year-old Hunter Chase Nance — walked up to her at a gas station and they exchanged numbers, local news station reported. He allegedl agreed to pick her up later and take her back to his place in China Grove.

Deputies said that Nance claimed he chose his alleged victim randomly and wanted to kill her “for the thrill,” Fox Carolina continued. He allegedly told them that he wanted to mutilate the woman and leave her body in a public place so people driving by could see.

His victim was able to escape and was helped by first responders after Nance’s neighbors saw her covered in blood, walking down the road, the New York Post reported.

Nance is also said to have expressed a desire to kill other people and engage in cannibalism, the outlet noted. (RELATED: REPORT: Multiple Bodies Found In Chicago Have People Scared Of A Serial Killer)

“It’s unbelievable,” Nance’s neighbor reportedly said. “I mean obviously it could’ve ended up worse. Thank God the girl was strong enough to fight him off and get away. Honestly, I’ve had thoughts go across my mind, ‘what if he tried to break in my house and get one of my daughters?’ That’s terrible that I even have that thought, I wish I hadn’t, but that is the reality of it right now.”

Nance was arrested and charged with false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon, and first-degree kidnapping. He’s being held on a total bond of $1.2 million and his first court appearance will be Tuesday, Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
