A dog walker found a dismembered human hand in Staten Island, New York, on Friday, belonging to a woman buried at a nearby cemetery.

An analysis of fingerprints revealed that the hand belonged to a woman buried at Resurrection Cemetery in Staten Island who died in 2011 at 63 years old, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).

“Her body is buried in Resurrection Cemetery and on February 27, 2023 the plot next to her grave was excavated for a new burial. The soil was placed in a nearby tree line and it is believed that the equipment used to excavate the grave site caused the hand to be separated from the body” the NYPD told Daily Caller.

The hand was found by a dog sniffing around and the owner contacted the police, who deployed cadaver dogs to search the area. (RELATED: REPORT: Body Found In Home Containing More Than 60 Cats)

The cemetery has launched its own investigation. “We have been informed that the remains of an individual who was buried at Resurrection Cemetery were disturbed, and some portions of those remains were discovered at some distance from the cemetery,” a spokesperson for Staten Island’s Resurrection Cemetery told Silive.com.

“While at this point we do not know what transpired, we take this matter with great seriousness and will conduct an investigation, as well as cooperate in any investigation that civil authorities might undertake.”

Staten Island’s Resurrection Cemetery did not immediately respond to Daily Caller’s request for comment.
