The Essential Packing Checklist for Expats

Relocating to a different country is nothing short of a challenge. When you think about it, even going on a short trip of a few days requires you to think your packing through a little bit. You have to decide what you need to take with you, get your passport and make sure your vaccinations are in order, ensure you arrive at the airport in time and that you’re wearing clothes that are both light to keep you comfortable but durable enough to stay warm on the plane. And then, when you arrive, you’ll most likely discover that you’ve forgotten to bring your toothbrush or phone charger.

Moving is the same experience, only amped up, so it makes sense to be a little apprehensive. It’s a significant change in your life, so you want to be extra careful throughout the process so you don’t leave anything behind. At the same time, it is also important that you’re not stressed out, as it will make the overall experience downright miserable. Maintaining a more carefree attitude will guarantee the overall process is successful and that you can move into your new home without a care in the world.

Here are some of the most important aspects you should consider when moving abroad.

Start in advance

While you shouldn’t allow yourself to get too anxious about the process, you must still take practical steps to see it done. To achieve this, it’s essential to start planning in advance. Making a comprehensive checklist will prevent you from overpacking. After all, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to take all your belongings with you unless you live a minimalist lifestyle. Otherwise, this is one of the best opportunities to remove the clutter that has accumulated in your drawers, on shelves and in the wardrobe.

If you’re relocating to the United States, you can head down to movingfeedback.com to compare between the different moving companies within the country. As such, you can discover the service that works best for you so that’ll put you in full control of the moving process so you have an overall positive experience.

Downsizing

Moving is the best time to get rid of things you no longer need. You don’t want to be worried about relocating too many things, and what’s more, the moving costs will be higher when you have to transport many items. However, you mustn’t make this choice rashly, as you don’t want to throw away things you can still use. For example, while some can advise you to get rid of the furniture, kitchenware and houseware you own, you should only do so if you’re prepared for the additional purchase when you arrive at your new home. If you don’t want to commit to other expenses, transporting what you already own is the more cost-effective option.

The clothes you take with you are another topic. Most people have a lot of unworn garments in their wardrobes, while others refuse to dispose of items that no longer fit them or that they haven’t worn in years. If you have clothing in your closet that fits this description, there’s no better time to get rid of it. If they can still be worn, you can make a donation, and if not, you send them to a textile recycling center. If you own pieces that are relatively similar to one another, you should keep the one you like more and leave the other one behind.

Depending on where you’re moving, you might also want a fresh start in the clothing department. Styles are different worldwide, and choosing something more similar to what the locals are wearing can improve your sense of belonging. For example, while American fashion tends to be more casual and laid back, in Europe, people like to dress up a bit more and create outfits that are a little more sophisticated. In Asia, the trend is towards looser, flowy clothes, while in Europe, despite a growing trend for oversized fashion, the silhouettes are more slim fitting.

Special items

Everybody owns sentimental pieces that they cannot say goodbye to, no matter what. There’s a wide array of objects that can fit into this category, including jewelry, books, photographs, holiday souvenirs, and even more obscure items such as a music box, a mug or a stuffed toy that are special because someone you love bought them as gifts, or because you’ve had them around for a very long time.

The way you transport these pieces is very important, as they tend to be smaller than the rest and can therefore become damaged quite easily. At the same time, you want to choose an option that makes transport more manageable and more convenient. For example, photos can be removed from their frames and stored in an album.

The essentials

Regardless of where you go, you must bring the essentials with you. A first aid kit containing basic medication such as aspirin, cough drops, decongestant tablets, antihistamine syrup, and a few days’ worth of any prescribed medicines you might be taking is an essential element of any well-packed luggage. It can take a while until you get in touch with a doctor and get your prescriptions refilled, so it’s better to take extra precautions before leaving.

If you have a pet, pack some food for them so they don’t go hungry on the road or are neglected during the first few days after you arrive when you are busy unpacking and putting everything in place.

Pack smart

Folding your clothes well and rolling the items that can be arranged in this manner will save a lot of room in your luggage. You don’t want to leave any empty space at all, so you might have to get a bit creative. For example, you can place rolled t-shirts or shorts into your shoes or boots to hold them in place better.

You should also try to make all the suitcases and backpacks of roughly similar weight, depending on their sizing. Naturally, a duffle bag will be heavier than a backpack you can take with you for a walk in the park, but too much uneven distribution can cause potential damage and will also be more difficult to carry.

Moving to a different country will leave you juggling some tough decisions regarding packing. However, with a little planning, you can get everything ready for your journey simply and efficiently.

Readers,

Instead of sucking up to the political and corporate powers that dominate America, The Daily Caller is fighting for you — our readers. We humbly ask you to consider joining us in this fight.

Now that millions of readers are rejecting the increasingly biased and even corrupt corporate media and joining us daily, there are powerful forces lined up to stop us: the old guard of the news media hopes to marginalize us; the big corporate ad agencies want to deprive us of revenue and put us out of business; senators threaten to have our reporters arrested for asking simple questions; the big tech platforms want to limit our ability to communicate with you; and the political party establishments feel threatened by our independence.

We don't complain -- we can't stand complainers -- but we do call it how we see it. We have a fight on our hands, and it's intense. We need your help to smash through the big tech, big media and big government blockade.

We're the insurgent outsiders for a reason: our deep-dive investigations hold the powerful to account. Our original videos undermine their narratives on a daily basis. Even our insistence on having fun infuriates them -- because we won’t bend the knee to political correctness.

One reason we stand apart is because we are not afraid to say we love America. We love her with every fiber of our being, and we think she's worth saving from today’s craziness.

Help us save her.

A second reason we stand out is the sheer number of honest responsible reporters we have helped train. We have trained so many solid reporters that they now hold prominent positions at publications across the political spectrum. Hear a rare reasonable voice at a place like CNN? There’s a good chance they were trained at Daily Caller. Same goes for the numerous Daily Caller alumni dominating the news coverage at outlets such as Fox News, Newsmax, Daily Wire and many others.

Simply put, America needs solid reporters fighting to tell the truth or we will never have honest elections or a fair system. We are working tirelessly to make that happen and we are making a difference.

Since 2010, The Daily Caller has grown immensely. We're in the halls of Congress. We're in the Oval Office. And we're in up to 20 million homes every single month. That's 20 million Americans like you who are impossible to ignore.

We can overcome the forces lined up against all of us. This is an important mission but we can’t do it unless you — the everyday Americans forgotten by the establishment — have our back.

Please consider becoming a Daily Caller Patriot today, and help us keep doing work that holds politicians, corporations and other leaders accountable. Help us thumb our noses at political correctness. Help us train a new generation of news reporters who will actually tell the truth. And help us remind Americans everywhere that there are millions of us who remain clear-eyed about our country's greatness.

In return for membership, Daily Caller Patriots will be able to read The Daily Caller without any of the ads that we have long used to support our mission. We know the ads drive you crazy. They drive us crazy too. But we need revenue to keep the fight going. If you join us, we will cut out the ads for you and put every Lincoln-headed cent we earn into amplifying our voice, training even more solid reporters, and giving you the ad-free experience and lightning fast website you deserve.

Patriots will also be eligible for Patriots Only content, newsletters, chats and live events with our reporters and editors. It's simple: welcome us into your lives, and we'll welcome you into ours.

We can save America together.

Become a Daily Caller Patriot today.
