Eight family members were killed in a fiery crash on April 15 while visiting the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí, authorities report.

Five adults, two children, and a one-month-old infant were killed after their Chevy Suburban reportedly struck an overturned tractor trailer on a highway near the city of Matehuala. The impact of the collision reportedly caused the SUV to burst into flames, according to The Kansas City Star.

The family members, who resided in Frankfort, Indiana, have been identified as Guadalupe Garcia, Fernando Garcia, Jesus Angeles, Maria Cuevas, Jocelyn Mejia Garcia, Jesus Mejia Garcia, Blanca Guzman and her infant child, according to a release from the Frankfort Police Department.

“We have lost 8 of our family members, friends and Frankfort residents. Please keep the family in your prayers,” Police Chief Scott Shoemaker said in the release. “We need to honor their memory and ensure the families get the answers regarding the cause of the crash.” (RELATED: Vehicle Collides With Tree And Catches Fire, Killing All Four Inside: Police)

“Our hearts ache for the family here in the City of Frankfort. The Community Schools of Frankfort will have grief counselors available to support friends, teachers and classmates of Jocelyn and Jesus beginning tomorrow, April 17,” school superintendent Dr. Matt Rhoda added in the release.
While Mexican authorities are still investigating the collision, Shoemaker assured the public that as more information became available, they would share it with the community. “We do know that Mexican officials are working with United States officials regarding those killed,” he stated, according to the release.
