Former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said Saturday that a stray bullet narrowly avoided hitting her nephew after it entered his bedroom from an unknown source.

A social media post from the former mayor details how the bullet appeared out of nowhere and pierce the wall of her nephew’s second-floor bedroom. “What does up must come down,” Bottoms wrote in a Twitter post Saturday afternoon. “Someone fired a gun in the air, likely miles away, and it came thru the house into my nephew’s room. He was in the bed inches away. We are grateful that God protected him. If you have a gun, please act responsibly. This could be you or your child.”

The exact location of the home is unknown, and it’s unclear whether Bottoms was in the house at the time, Fox5 reported. Bottoms’ other nephew, Darius Bottoms, was killed as a result of gun violence in 2014 at the age of 18. He was sitting in his car, and was killed in a case of mistaken identity. Bottoms’ most recent employment was in the White House Office of Public Engagement, a position she left in February. She left the position in February. At one time, she was apparently under consideration to join President Joe Biden’s ticket as his vice presidential nominee, and is expected to be helping Biden with his reelection campaign for 2024.
