A study published Wednesday by WalletHub found that Washington D.C. has the highest national share of youth homelessness, and highest rates of youth poverty.

WalletHub’s research focused on determining the states with the most at-risk youth. The researchers compared scores for all 50 states and the District of Columbia across 15 key indicators related to education and employment, and health factors such as obesity, drug use, drinking, and mental and emotional problems.

Washington D.C. was found to have the highest rates of homeless youth, followed shortly by California, Alaska, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. Using their scale, WalletHub researchers found that D.C.’s homeless youth rank around 0.51%, some 17 times higher than Connecticut and Virginia, which had the lowest rates in the nation.

President Joe Biden’s backyard is also home to the most young people living in poverty, despite having some of the highest rates of young people with a high school diploma.

The study also found that 16% of young Americans are not working and not in school, increasing their overall risk of poverty, violence, homelessness, and other key indicators for social decline. (RELATED: Surprising No One, America’s Worst-Run ‘Large’ City Is A Democrat Stronghold: STUDY)

The results come in stark contrast to WalletHub’s 2022 study, which found that almost all of the states with the most idle and at-risk youth are southern. While Louisiana was ranked #1 at least two years in a row, Washington D.C.’s rise to the top of the list should be a significant concern for all those thinking that those in our capital can do anything for young people on a local level.
