Detransitioner Chloe Cole choked up during the House Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday as she discussed her gender transition and the role her parents played in it.

Dr. Myriam Reynolds, a mother of transgender identified child and a professional counselor, told the committee hearing that sex change treatments for minors were necessary and lifesaving. Reynolds’ child is currently undergoing hormone replacement therapy.

Cole, who is suing Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Permanente Medical Group for providing her with puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and a double mastectomy between the ages of 13 and 17, addressed Reynolds during the hearing. “I understood that Mrs. Reynolds is scared for her child, and I just want to set the record straight that I don’t hate her, I don’t think anyone in this room hates her. In fact, I see my own mother and my own father in her. And that clearly she dearly loves her child. And she’s doing her best with what she’s been given,” Cole said.

“I think every parent deserves the utmost grace and guidance with how to help their child. That being said, I don’t wish for her child to have the same result as I did,” she continued. “I don’t wish for anybody to regret transition and detransition. Because it’s incredibly difficult, it comes with its own difficulties, and its not easy. and I hope that her child gets to have a happy and fulfilling adulthood.”

“After my breasts were taken away from me, the tissue was incinerated,” Cole testified earlier in the hearing. “Before I was able to legally drive, I had a huge part of my future womanhood taken from me. I will never be able to breastfeed. I struggle to look at myself in the mirror at times. I still struggle to this day with sexual dysfunction. And I have massive scars across my chest and the skin grafts that they took of my nipples are weeping fluid today.”
