Tuesday is the day we find out whether extraterrestrial beings received a message humans sent into the cosmos 40 years ago.
The message was first beamed out on Aug. 15, 1983, and contained 13 drawings depicting the evolution of life on Earth, according to the Japanese outlet Asahi. The message was developed by Masaki Morimoto and Hisashi Hirabayashi, and turned into radio signals, which were beamed outwards, and likely hit planets around the star Altair, roughly 16.7 light-years away.
Altair is in the Aquila constellation. Given its proximity to Earth, researchers believe it’s the likely first place to receive our message, but also send one back. Scientists are scanning the skies for anything and everything out of the ordinary. While it would be super cool for aliens to finally hit us back in our cosmic DM’s, it’s also the one thing Stephen Hawking told us not to do. “If you look at history, contact between humans and less intelligent organisms have often been disastrous from their point of view, and encounters between civilizations with advanced versus primitive technologies have gone badly for the less advanced,” Hawking said while he was still alive.

Researchers at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute believe that aliens could have been trying to contact us for years using technologies we don’t have. Or, they could be waiting for their version of “high noon” — when these planets pass in front of their suns from Earth’s perspective.
