A middle school football coach for the Kingsville Independent School District in Texas died suddenly after collapsing during a game Sept. 22, according to AZ Family.

Taking on Tuloso-Midway, Gillett Middle School coach Marco Contreras collapsed while on the field, according to AZ Family. He was quickly tended to, but first responders were reportedly unable to revive him. Contreras was then taken to a local hospital, where he was reportedly pronounced dead.

“Our condolences pour out to the family of our beloved coach, Marco Contreras,” school officials said in a statement. “Coach Contreras will be sincerely missed by all who knew him.”

The game was postponed and reportedly played Saturday.

“In a time of sorrow, it is often comforting to come together as a community and participate in something we all love to do. Therefore, our coaches and football team have decided to play the football game,” the school added, via AZ Family, issuing a promise to offer grief counseling for students in need.

Friends and supporters set up a fundraiser to assist the Contreras family with expenses. So far, it has raised over $9,000, according to KIDY-TV.

Larry Contreras, who is the brother of Coach Contreras, said the family is very appreciative to those who have donated. (RELATED: ‘Absolutely Shocking’: Champion Bodybuilder Dies Suddenly At 34)
