A Russian schoolgirl reportedly went on a shooting rampage with a pump-action shotgun Thursday that ultimately ended with her suicide.

Her school shooting ended up killing one of her classmates and leaving five wounded, the Associated Press (AP) reported.(RELATED: ‘Multiple Victims’ Reported After Shooting On UNLV Campus)

“In the incident in Bryansk, two teenagers were killed and five teenagers were injured, all of them were hospitalized in moderate condition. They are receiving all the necessary medical care,” Assistant Minister of Health Alexey Kuznetsov told RIA Novosti, a Russian state-owned news outlet.

The girl was an eighth grader, Tass reported. One of the students told RIA Novosti that the shooter managed to smuggle the gun into the school in a paper tube. The gun belonged to the girl’s father, who owned it legally, Tass noted. She also brought a knife onto the school premises due to the school’s metal detector not working, Tass reported. Authorities have brought in the schoolgirl’s father for questioning, the outlet reported.

The motivation behind the shooting is unknown at this time. Police told Tass that their main theory was that conflict between the girl and her classmates may have been the cause.

Oleg Bogomaz, the governor of the Russian province where the incident happened, called it a “terrible tragedy” and promised that “[t]he families of the killed girl and injured children will be provided all the necessary assistance,” the Moscow Times reported.

After school shootings in the Russian cities of Kazan and Perm in 2021, lawmakers tightened gun control laws, the outlet noted.
