CNN political director David Chalian warned on Wednesday about Vice President Kamala Harris’ significant polling deficit against former President Donald Trump among white voters without college degrees.
Trump is leading Harris among white likely voters without college degrees in Pennsylvania by 32 points and in Georgia by 44 points, according to a chart displayed behind Chalian based on CNN’s late August polling in six battleground states. Chalian, on “CNN News Central,” labeled this as “a trouble sign for Harris,” adding that Trump’s 33-point lead among “white college-educated voters” in Georgia also poses a substantial challenge for the vice president. “If you look at the white voters without college degrees, this is a Trump base constituency, obviously. You see his huge numbers with this group. You see that this is a trouble sign for Harris,” Chalian said. “She also, in places like Georgia, is not doing well with white college-educated voters. She probably wants to make up some ground with white college-educated voters across these battlegrounds as well.”
NBC News national political correspondent Steve Kornacki noted on Tuesday that, despite Harris’ narrow lead over Trump, the former president remains a formidable contender in the electoral college as he outperformed polling expectations in both 2016 and 2020.
“Take a look here at the last two elections, 2020, 2016, the polling at this point coming out of Labor Day, beginning the fall rush,” Kornacki told host Ana Cabrera. “In 2016, Hillary Clinton led on average by five points. Of course, Donald Trump won in 2016. And Joe Biden had an even bigger lead on average, Labor Day 2020. Donald Trump didn’t win that election, but certainly in the electoral college, he came this close to doing so, Ana. So Trump has run from behind before, certainly.”
Journalist Peter Hamby also warned comedian Bill Maher on Friday that a shift in support among young men toward Trump could spell disaster for Harris’ presidential campaign.
“This is a real issue for Kamala Harris, though,” Hamby said. “Like, this could be fatal for her campaign … Democrats need to win 60% of the youth vote to win the White House.”
“Hillary came up short; Obama did it; Biden did it. Kamala Harris is right now at, like, 55% of the youth vote,” he added. “If she doesn’t get to 60, she could lose the election, and it’s because young men, Gen Z men, are breaking to Trump.”
