BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Air Force says two officers accused of stealing classified material from an underground missile launch facility in North Dakota have been allowed to resign rather than face courts-martial.
The military says Air Force Secretary Michael Donley approved the resignations of Capt. Paul Borowiecki (bor-oh-WIK’-ee) and Capt. Javed Abbas.
The officers were accused of taking the classified material from the Minot Air Force Base facility in July 2005. Officials say Borowiecki admitted the theft in 2008 and returned one device used to detect equipment tampering.
The Air Force has said a second launch component remains missing, but that the public has never been in danger.
The Air Force released the status of the officers on Wednesday after months of inquiries by The Associated Press.
