In 2002 renowned U.S. scholar Philip Jenkins published The Next Christendom: The Rise of Global Christianity, in which he argued that, far from being in general retreat, Christianity was rising rapidly in the global South:

–Jenkins discussed the differing perceptions of Biblical truth and broader doctrine between the north and south, while projecting possible implications both on global Christian culture and society at large.

–Included in his analysis was the observation that missionary activity was now beginning to flow back in the opposite direction to that which had characterized the previous 200 to 300 years.

Reverse Mission

In mission circles this has become termed as the “reverse-mission agenda.” Although in its relative infancy when Jenkins was writing this, the validity of the observation has become ever more apparent with missionaries from Africa, India and Latin America arriving in Europe, as well as taking a more active part in some of the more traditional areas such as the Middle East and South Asia.
