During this dark civil war of politics known as the debt crisis, Nancy Pelosi provided a beacon of hope for bipartisanship — with flowers.

The House Minority Leader sent flowers to President George W. Bush on Monday in honor of his sixty-fifth birthday — an age that makes the former president six years her junior. Pelosi is known on the Hill for sending flowers, and expensive ones at that.

In 2009, Politico reported that she spent $2,993 in taxpayer money on flowers between June and October of that year. (Pelosi: Cantor walked ‘because Democrats want to raise taxes’)

Pelosi’s bouquet even had a message for Bush, as reported in the Washington Post’s “Reliable Source” column: “Mr. President, Happy Birthday! Welcome to the Medicare years!”
