Detroit— When he was 12, Prince Fielder was able to hit a baseball into the seats at Tiger Stadium.

Fifteen years later, the Tigers are about to pay him a hefty sum to do the same at Comerica Park.

Maybe this moment — of Prince joining the Tigers — always was meant to be.

Cecil Fielder, Prince’s father, thinks it was.

“He’s been wanting that kid since he was a little kid,” Cecil said on MLB Network Radio, referring to Tigers owner Mike Ilitch, who bought the team when Prince was eight, and a constant, irrepressible presence in the Tigers clubhouse.

That kid has grown up, though. He’s 27.

And he’s hit 228 home runs the last six seasons for the Brewers.

But here’s something else about that kid: On Tuesday, with Ilitch sweeping in with the highest bid, Prince agreed to a nine-year, $214 million contract with the Tigers.
