A Brazilian university student faked her own kidnapping in order to avoid turning in her dissertation.

Susan Paola Fadel Correia claimed three men abducted, restrained and held her for 24 hours, the Daily Mail reports.

According to Correia, she managed to escape, borrowed a man’s phone to call her mother, and was helped home by two friends who found her in the street.

A few days later, Correia admitted that the kidnapping was a fake and that she had been hiding out at a friend’s house. Police division director Gilvando Furtado said Correia faked the crime because “she did not want to upset her mother yet again as the same thing happened last term.”

The student has been charged with false reporting of a crime and could face up to six months in prison.
