The first 10 minutes of the opening ceremony at the Sochi Winter Olympics featured a high-profile malfunction. Five large snowflake lights were supposed to expand into the Olympic rings, but one just didn’t make it.
The result was a sad showing of four rings and an asterisk.
In Vancouver in 2010, a cauldron for the Olympic flame failed to open, leading to a very awkward moment between Steve Nash, Wayne Gretzky, Catriona Le May Doan and Rick Hanson.
