President Obama boasted in his State of the Union address Tuesday “no nation dares to attack us or our allies,” just hours after news broke Iran is holding 10 U.S. sailors.

“The United States of America is the most powerful nation on Earth,” he said. “Period. It’s not even close. … Our troops are the finest fighting force in the history of the world,” he said. “No nation dares to attack us or our allies, because they know that’s the path to ruin.”

Obama also touted the “global coalition” his administration created to counter Iran’s nuclear program, and said “we’re threatened less by evil empires and more by failing states.”

The Pentagon confirmed Tuesday Iran is holding two U.S. Navy boats and their respective crews, composed of 10 U.S. Navy sailors. Iran said it picked up the boats on their way from Kuwait to Bahrain, and has promised to quickly release the crews.

Despite Iran’s seizing of the sailors, missile tests and involvement in regional conflicts in the Middle East, and despite Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and Syria, Obama said “we’re threatened less by evil empires and more by failing states.”

As someone who starts his day with an intelligence briefing, Obama said he knows how dangerous a place the world can be. But he said this danger is not due to “diminished American strength or some looming superpower.”
