Brussels police officials have launched an internal investigation into claims that a senior officer was intoxicated while leading forces on the day of the Brussels bombings.
Senior police officers were called to a meeting with the mayor on the morning of the March 22 attack, which killed 35 and left dozens in critical condition, to discuss pressing issues of surveillance and police staff levels. The police commissioner of one district was reportedly intoxicated and in no shape to come up with a plan of action, local newspaper La Derniere Heure reported Wednesday. Brussels is divided into three police districts, each with its own department and jurisdiction.

The Belgian police force has been under fierce criticism for its inability to arrest the terrorists before the attacks. Police still have no profile on the “man in the white hat,” who was the only airport bomber to survive and escape the attack. Several previously detained individuals were released after police had insufficient evidence to hold them.
