Despite having spent the past nine months running for president and being one of just three remaining Republican candidates, a staggeringly high number of Republicans have no idea what to feel about Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
According to a newly released Associated Press/GfK poll, 34 percent of Americans and 26 percent of Republicans have no opinion, positive or negative, about Kasich. In contrast, only 4 percent of Americans have no opinion about Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Kasich is already mathematically eliminated from clinching the Republican nomination, but has refused to suspend his campaign and insists he is still competing to become president.
The poll holds other interesting findings regarding the Republican race.
While a great deal of opposition to Trump has been premised on the belief he is unelectable, Republicans appear to view him as the most electable candidate remaining. Eighty-one percent of them believe Trump could triumph in the general election, while 66 percent think Sen. [crscore]Ted Cruz[/crscore] can win and just 41 percent think Kasich has a chance. Notably, this is a reverse of current polling, which suggests Kasich would perform best against likely Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton while Trump would lose badly.
The poll also suggests GOP voters have little enthusiasm for contested nomination fight at the party’s July convention. Fifty-eight percent said the candidate with the most delegates should be the party’s presidential nominee, even if no candidate gets a majority, while only 40 percent were willing to support a brokered convention. Unsurprisingly, how voters felt about Trump strongly influenced their answers. Eighty percent of Trump supporters said the candidate with the most delegates should get the nomination, while only a third of Trump opponents believed the same.
The poll was conducted from March 31 through April 4 and had a sample size of 1,076 adults. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
