An arsonist torched a school Monday in Sweden that the government was preparing to use as a refugee center.
The first attempt to burn the school to the ground failed April 9, when a would-be arsonist lit several failed fires on the roof. This time around the arsonist was successful, Aftonbladet, a Swedish-language newspaper, reports.
Peter Hellström, head of emergency services in the town of Härnösand, said “sick” people are the sort who go out of their way to burn down refugee shelters.
Emergency services will remain in the area for at least the full morning to make sure the fire is totally out and the building cools down. Firefighters had to try hard to make sure the blaze didn’t spread to nearby buildings.
As firefighters battled the blaze, police opened a criminal investigation under the assumption that this was an arson attempt, mostly because of the previous incident April 9, in which an arsonist tried to use gasoline to take out the empty school.
Just last week, officials met together to plan redevelopment of the school.
There is nothing left of the building. Flames quickly engulfed the structure and burst through the roof, leaving charred rubble behind. Officials say the building cannot be salvaged.
No one was injured in the fire, as the building had not yet been used to house refugees.
