A brand-spanking-new organization called Historians Against Trump revealed itself to America on Monday with a stark warning that presumed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump “poses a threat to American democracy” and leads “a movement rooted in fear and authoritarianism.”

The July 11 missive from Historians Against Trump is titled “An Open Letter to the American People.” It runs 697 words.

“The lessons of history compel us to speak out against Trump,” the open letter declares.

“Our profession reminds us to look for the humanity in everyone as we examine the ideas, interests and movements that shape world events,” the letter then explains.

The letter then proceeds to find exactly zero humanity in Trump.

“Donald Trump’s record of speeches, policies and social media is an archive of know-nothingism and blinding self-regard,” the letter charges. “Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is a campaign of violence: violence against individuals and groups; against memory and accountability; against historical analysis and fact.”

The letter attacks “Trump University,” “Trumpism” and “Donald Trump’s contempt for constructive, evidence-based argumentation.”

“Donald Trump bullies and suppresses the press, and seeks to weaken First Amendment protections as President,” the letter criticizes. “Non-white, non-male professionals and civil servants are irredeemably compromised in Donald Trump’s eyes.”

Also, thanks to Trump, “the President of the United States is under suspicion as illegitimate and alien because of his skin color and heritage.”

Historians Against Trump promises that it is organizing with like-minded groups such as Writers On Trump and Citizen Therapists and “will be marching alongside these and many other groups as part of the peaceful protests at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.”

Historians Against Trump further swears that its members “will continue our work into the fall, publishing essays and articles that place Trumpism into historical perspective.”

Language at the very bottom of the open letter states that Historians Against Trump’s exceedingly straightforward webpage uses a “simple template” and is “powered by Blogger.”

“Historians Against Trump does not align itself with any political party or candidate,” the open letter also notes.

Below the letter, there are 177 signatures (as of early Wednesday morning).

Some of the signatories are professors and administrators from esteemed institutions including Princeton University, UCLA, Stanford University Smith College, Vassar College and Georgetown University.

Other signees include a library director, a retired union representative, a social studies teacher, an advocate for people with disabilities, a self-described “concerned citizen” and an instructor at West Kentucky Community and Technical College.

Historians Against Trump has no plans to endorse any presidential candidate, notes Inside Higher Ed.
