Police fatally shot a man in West Baltimore who opened fire on cops Thursday night.
Four plainclothes officers heard gunfire and drove towards it where they got into a shootout, WBALTV reports. Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith said the shooter shot at the cops with an “AR-15 style” rifle. Police fired back with at least one bullet, striking a fatal wound to his upper body. Two cops have been placed on administrative duties.
“They actually heard gunfire,” Smith said. “When they heard this gunfire, they drove toward it at one of the apartment buildings on Winchester Street. They drove into the parking lot and they saw a man armed with an AR-15-style rifle, firing that weapon. He was firing that weapon and he turned that weapon toward officers and started firing the weapon toward officers and the officers returned fire.”
Smith said cops searched the area after the shooting to ensure there were not other suspects.
