M. Night Shyamalan’s new film “Split,” starring James McAvoy as a sinister kidnapper with multiple personalities, has received its first trailer. Check it out below.

Shyamalan’s career has started to bounce back a bit after a string of critical and commercial busts with last year’s surprise hit “The Visit” earning $98 million worldwide on a $5 million budget. “Split,” which Shyamalan wrote and directed, could continue that trend.

The film follows three teenage girls who are kidnapped by McAvoy’s creepy character Kevin. “I was sent to get you for a reason,” he tells them. But like most Shyamalan films, things are not quite what they seem. It turns out that McAvoy’s character suffers from multiple personality disorder, with 23 individuals sharing one body. The different identities are as far flung as can be imagined, with Kevin transforming into a middle aged woman and even a nine-year-old boy.

Throughout the trailer, Kevin warns the girls of a “beast,” believing the creature to be real. Is he telling the truth? Fans will have to wait to find out.

“Split” will arrive in theaters on Jan. 20, 2017.
