According to Variety, the Nielsen live-plus same day ratings show the 2016 VMAs brought in 6.5 million viewers across MTV and its 11 sister stations. (RELATED: How Kanye West Used His 4 Unadulterated Minutes During The MTV VMAs)
Last year was the first time in the network’s history that the awards show was broadcast other Viacom-owned stations.
MTV argues that while the TV ratings may have been down, the live streaming of the show was up. In 2016, it drew in 62.8 million digital-video streams, up 70 percent over the previous year.
The MTV show also garnered a lot of attention across social media, with nearly 46 million video streams on Facebook.
