A government website created to show the American people how well the federal government is performing is not performing very well at all, according to a government agency’s audit.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that the website “Performance.gov” has several issues, including problems “with the website’s accessibility, purpose, data visualizations, and search function.”

The website also does not comply with the law, since it does, “not fully meet selected Digitalgov.gov requirements for federal websites…and do not fully meet provisions of the GPRA Modernization Act of 2010 (GPRAMA).”

The Office of Management and Budget, General Services Administration, and the Performance Improvement Council, are the three government agencies responsible for the performance of “Performance.gov.”

GAO recommends they take three steps to improve the tool.

The three agencies should work together to ensure that information “consistently complies” with federal law, analyze the site’s structure, “implement usability tests” and come up with “a strategic plan” that develops long-term goals.

The website was intended to serve as a vital resource for further transparency, while concurrently proving the federal government’s productive work.

But the flagrant irony comes from the fact that the very mechanism used to prove the federal government’s constructive performances is actually yet another example of its struggle with technology.
