America’s first elected black governor slammed Hillary Clinton for taking black voters for granted.
“For her to go out and say to the African-American community, ‘I want you to elect me so that we can continue the legacy of Barack Obama,’ what exactly is it that you want to continue?” former Democratic Virginia Gov. Douglas Wilder asked in a Washington Post interview Thursday.
“You cannot win this election without the African-American vote,” added Wilder. “Hillary obviously has the necessary qualifications … but tell me how what you’ve done relates to what [the black community] needs.”
Wilder, the grandson of slaves and a Korean war vet, went further on to say, “Let’s assume Trump is the worst guy in the world — fine,” noting that he asked Clinton’s running mate Sen. Tim Kaine, “What makes you better?” He added, “Because you’re not considered the worst, but right next to it.”
Wilder does not agree with Trump when it comes to how he engages with the black community, but gives him points for at least doing it.
“Whether it’s genuine or legitimate or not, at least he’s doing it,” he said. “Either way, I think it’s good.”
Wilder recalled to the Post a conversation with a friend right after Trump campaigned in Detroit recently. “You’ve been sticking with the Democratic Party all these years,” the GOP nominee said, “’and what has it gotten you?’ Then the guy turned to me and said, ‘You know, Doug, I hate to say this, but he is right,” Wilder said.
