French police squared off with migrants Saturday night during protests against the closure of the infamous “Jungle” migrant camp in Calais.

The “Jungle” is the largest makeshift migrant camp in Europe with thousands of residents hoping to reach the United Kingdom. Plans to shut down the camp by the end of the year have been met with violent protests in recent weeks.

Footage show how police use water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets against a crowd throwing fire crackers at them.

Police eventually stormed the crowd to calm the situation.

Trucks on the Calais roads have been subject to hijacking attempts from migrants who try to smuggled themselves across the English Channel.

The U.K. began construction Saturday on a 13 ft. high wall along the freeway. The wall is supposed to make it harder for migrants to gain access to the road, but locals and transportation advocacy groups question how effective it will be.

“Money would be much better spent on boosting security along the approach road,” Kate Gibbs, a spokeswoman for the Road Haulage Association, told The Daily Mail. “This is being called the Great Wall of Calais but what good will it do? We are telling our drivers not to stop within 150 miles of Calais so they are not targeted by migrants.”
