Former Governor Mitt Romney is the favorite among voters for secretary of state, according to a Tuesday Morning Consult poll from Politico.
Thirty-five percent of voters in the poll said they preferred Romney to any of the other choices, and former Mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani took second place, with 31 percent of respondents declaring he was the better choice.
No candidate gained the majority, but that is most likely due to a large number of solid potential picks. Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, former Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton, and General David Petraeus are all at the top of the list, according to Trump spokeswoman Kellyanne Conway.
Although Romney headed the list among overall voters, Republicans favored Giuliani, with 41 percent of conservatives choosing the former mayor. Thirty-nine percent of Republican voters selected Romney.
Former Governor Jon Huntsman of Utah is also apparently under consideration for the role as well, although the Trump team has yet to officially confirm the news. The Associated Press reported Monday that Trump is backing away from potential high-profile pics like Romney in favor of lesser known politicians. Trump’s rumored consideration of Huntsman is important because he has an extended background as a diplomat to China and Singapore throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s. Huntsman also called for Trump to back out of the race after a 2005 recording of Trump’s comments about women were published in October.
Although a fair measure of public opinion, polls are still under fire after they incorrectly predicted a Clinton win in the 2016 presidential election. Monmouth University polling director Patrick Murray told Business Insider that “Polls might not be capable of predicting elections” shortly after the election results were published.
The poll was conducted last Thursday and Friday, and included 1,401 registered voters. The poll had a margin of error of 3 percentage point in either direction.
