Various groups are pledging to fight a Virginia lawmaker’s attempt to pass a transgender bathroom bill in the state.

Civil rights groups have preemptively labeled a proposed bathroom bill discriminatory and unnecessary, reports NBC Washington.

“There are laws in place to prevent that man from doing anything harmful. Those laws are there for a good reason and good purpose. This other bill, there’s no need for it,” remarked Rev. Emma Chattin, the Executive Director of  TransGender Education Association of Greater Washington.

Republican Del. Bob Marshall introduced a bill Tuesday that seeks to prevent transgenders from using bathrooms corresponding to their gender identity in government-owned buildings. Marshall’s proposed statute — the Physical Privacy Act — would also force schools to alert parents if their child wants to identify as the opposite gender to that assigned at birth.

“Some guys will use anything to make a move on some teenage girls or women,” Marshall said. “Mere separation of the sexes should not be considered discrimination.”

Some agree with Marshall, offering praise for the bill.

“Public school facilities are not the place for social experiments that permit early exposure to sexual issues when there is ample evidence that such exposure can lead to long term developmental damage,” Travis Witt, a board member for the Virginia First Foundation, said in a statement.

North Carolina passed a similar bill and nearly faced an economic crisis as a result. Their bathroom bill, HB2, also prevented transgenders from using the bathroom that corresponded to their gender identity.

Celebrities and businesses loudly and publicly protested North Carolina’s bathroom bill. PayPal refused to bring approximately 400 jobs to the tar heel state. (RELATED: North Carolina ‘Bathroom Bill’ Remains After Repeal Fails)
