The White House revealed President Donald Trump’s top defense priorities on its website Friday, which center on rebuilding U.S. military strength.
First and foremost, Trump plans to end the sequester, which capped defense spending in 2011 (and continues to limit defense spending). Additionally, he intends to ensure high levels of readiness across all branches of the U.S. armed forces.
“Our military needs every asset at its disposal to defend America,” said the new webpage. “We cannot allow other nations to surpass our military capability. The Trump Administration will pursue the highest level of military readiness.”
North Korea and Iran are the only foreign adversaries named on the site. The Trump administration plans to develop a “state-of-the-art missile defense system” to protect against missile attacks from the two rogue countries. The U.S. planned to deploy the advanced “terminal high altitude area defense,” or THAAD, to South Korea in order to deter potential North Korean attack, though deployment has been delayed due to a land rights dispute. The military activated a new missile defense battery in Romania in May in an apparent effort to counter potential Iranian attacks.
The Trump administration also plans to prioritize developing new offensive and defensive cyber weapons and recruit “the best and brightest Americans” to U.S. Cyber Command.
Veteran health care will also get an overhaul, since the administration plans to cut “excessive red tape” and streamline the bureaucracy by firing “corrupt and incompetent” executives with the Department of Veteran Affairs.
