Oklahoma City transgenders expressed concern over a restaurant hanging a “don’t use the wrong one” sign on their bathrooms recently.
Steak and Catfish Barn has had the sign up outside its bathroom for the past ten months, reports KFOR. The sign informs patrons that there is no specific bathroom for transgender people.
“We do not have a transgender bathroom. So don’t be caught in the wrong one. Thank you, Bob,” the sign reads.
A gay organization claimed the sign was a “threat of violence” against the transgender community.
“You’ve got this sign implying a threat of potential violence against somebody for going to pee. That’s not the Oklahoma standard. That’s not what it means to be American. That’s just wrong,” said Troy Stevenson, a member of Freedom Oklahoma.
Paula Schonauer, a transgender woman, also claimed the sign was a threat and “disturbed” her.
Yelp reviewers called the owner a “bigot” for his sign and gave his restaurant one star. “Congratulations you have now entered the world of bigotry and there is a cure for it,” one Yelp reviewer wrote.
The restaurant’s owner, Bob Warner, explained that he put the sign up to try and protect all of his customers.
“We have a lot of redneck guys that come in here. Truck drivers and everything. They’re big husky guys and I said ‘man alive!’ If their wife or their little girl walked in that bathroom and a man followed them in there, I wouldn’t have a restaurant,” Warner said.
