Stephen Colbert had the task of breaking the news of James Comey’s firing to his audience and he certainly didn’t expect them to break out into cheers.
Before the show aired Tuesday night, “The Late Show” tweeted out a video of Colbert reacting to Comey’s firing.
“Huge story that broke just minutes ago, like less than ten minutes ago, FBI Director James Comey has just been fired by Donald Trump,” Colbert said.
But much to the chagrin of Colbert, the audience began loudly cheering and clapping for the development.

“Wow…wow…HUGE Donald Trump fans here tonight,” Colbert said, clearly surprised by the audience’s reaction.
Later in the video, the audience got back into form, giving Colbert some angry jeers and boos when Attorney General Jeff Session’s name was brought up.
Some Twitter users caught the awkwardness of the audience’s reaction to the firing.

@colbertlateshow What a gentle shepherd @colbertlateshow is, to gently guide his flock back to cognitive dissonance after they exhibit signs of common sense!
