Cafeteria peanut butter was the key to an Alabama jailbreak during which 12 Walker County Jail inmates escaped Sunday night, the Associated Press reported Monday.

Local law enforcement captured 11 of the escapees within eight hours of their escape, but a manhunt is ongoing for Brady Andrew Kilpatrick, 24, who remains at large. Inmates reportedly used peanut butter from the cafeteria to cover part of the number designation above a cell door, making it resemble the same number above a door that, if unlocked, would lead to their freedom, according to the AP.

Walker County Sheriff James Underwood said the inmates then asked a guard in the control room, who was new to the job, to open the cell door. Observing the changed number above the door the inmates asked to go through, he pressed “unlock” for the corresponding number door in the control room, inadvertently opening a door that led to freedom.

“It may sound crazy, but these people are crazy like a fox,” Underwood said in a news conference. “Inmates scheme all the time to con us and our employees at the jail. You have to stay on your toes. This is one time we slipped up. I’m not going to make any excuses.”

The sheriff said it took less than 10 minutes for the 12 inmates to escape the jail grounds, taking off their bright orange uniforms and using them to scale the barbed wire fence surrounding the facility.

The inmates were ages 18-30 and two had charges for attempted murder, but most were serving sentences for theft or drug crimes. The county police are offering a $500 reward to information leading to Kilpatrick’s arrest, CNN reported.

Inmates reportedly took the commonly-served peanut butter sandwiches from the cafeteria and corrupted them with nefarious purpose.

“They love peanut butter sandwiches,” Underwood said.
