A man confessed to cannibalism in South Africa last week by walking into a police station with parts of severed human hand and leg meat, saying “I’m tired of eating human flesh.”
Five people have been arrested in the cannibalism case since Friday, the Associated Press reports, and as many as three hundred locals have admitted to consuming human meat.
Four of the accused cannibals — Lungisani Magubane, 30, Sthembiso Sithole, 31, Nino Mbatha, 32, and Lindokuhle Masondo, 32 — appeared in court Monday to answer for the charges.
Some of the men arrested allegedly raped, killed, chopped and ate the body of a woman, News24 reports. “This has happened within our community,” ward councillor Mthembeni Majola of Estcourt, South Africa, told News24. “Families, people we know and live with have now confessed to eating this woman.”
“We don’t know what to do or who to trust,” Majola said.
One of the men arrested was a traditional healer, and had told members of the community that if they dug up graves they would become strong, and if they brought him human bones, they would become rich, Majola said.
