Republican Virginia Rep. Dave Brat asserted that “the swamp is in full control” because President Donald Trump is being forced to make deals with Democrats.
It was reported Thursday that Trump and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had reached a “gentleman’s agreement” to repeal the debt ceiling. Trump also agreed to sign a package of hurricane relief, a debt ceiling increase, and a government funding bill.
“In May you said something interesting, you said this about the president: ‘he’s learning the politics up here,” MSNBC host Chuck Todd said to Brat on Thursday. “Well, what do you think he’s learned now?”
“The swamp is in full control as far as we’re all concerned,” Brat said.
Brat said he didn’t fully fault Trump for reaching out to deal with Democrats considering Republicans repeatedly promised to repeal Obamacare and yet failed to do so when they had full control of the government.
“He couldn’t get what he wanted done,” Brat explained. “The swamp is winning, right, in terms of the forgotten man. It’s not about the bubble up here, that’s the problem. The focus is always on the politics instead of on the people.”
