Former White House adviser Steve Bannon is more powerful now than when he was serving the Trump administration, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said Thursday.

“He has a lot more influence outside of the White House than inside of the White House because Donald Trump will listen to him on ’60 Minutes.’ Donald Trump will read what he says on Breitbart. That’s just the way it is. If he’s inside fighting with 30 other people then there’s the battle and that gets watered down,” Scarborough said on “Morning Joe.”

Scarborough said Bannon’s natural environment is in conservative media where he can support President Donald Trump from the outside.

“Steve Bannon is where Steve Bannon needs to be. I think for the sake of Steve Bannon and the sake of all of Steve Bannon’s causes, instead of putting him inside a White House bureaucracy, let him out and you let him run and carry your water,” he said. “It never made sense that they put a suit on this guy and tried to gentrify him. It doesn’t work.”

Scarborough argued that by giving interviews to the mainstream media and continuing to work at Breitbart, Bannon is getting Trump’s attention more directly and advancing his personal policy goals.

“If he [Bannon] goes on 60 minutes and is profiled on 60 minutes, then he gets the audience of one that he wants in a way that he didn’t get inside the White House,” Scarborough said.

Charlie Rose will interview Bannon on “60 Minutes,” set to air Sunday at 7 p.m.

Co-host Mika Brzezinski asked Scarborough if Bannon’s newfound influence was a good thing and Scarborough refused to answer.

“I’m not saying it’s a good thing or a bad thing. I’m just laying out what’s happening in the field here. That for Steve Bannon being outside of the White House makes him a more effective spokesperson for what he believes in, then even being inside the White House where he was in constant battles with everybody,” Scarborough concluded.
