President Donald Trump caused outrage Thursday afternoon by calling various third world countries “shitholes” in a meeting with lawmakers at the White House.
In a private meeting with lawmakers, Trump is quoted as saying:
“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”
The president was referring to immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries and a proposal to restore protections to them.
- “‘Why are we having all of these people from,’ — and I apologize for using this word here, but this is a quote from the president — ‘why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?’”
- “This meeting behind closed doors, in which the president referred to countries like Haiti and countries in Africa as a ‘shithole.’”
- “And I noticed Wolf, you hesitated to use that word, I hesitate to use it myself, as an s-hole or shithole is the word that the Washington Post is quoting the president saying,” Acosta said.
The administration is currently attempting to reach a deal on giving illegal aliens who came to the U.S. as minors permanent legalization. We have yet to see how the comments will affect the legislation.
