An abortion advocate used a picture of a deformed child without seeking permission, and the child’s parents are fighting back.

“Someone had been using my child’s image to promote eugenics. She was the poster child of who should be aborted and doesn’t deserve healthcare,” the girl’s mother told WHAS11 News.

Natalie and Mark Weaver’s daughter Sophia has Rett syndrome, an extremely rare and degenerative condition. They found out that she had the condition when she was 5 years old, and the disease will soon make Sophia unable to walk, talk, or engage in any kind of normal activities. Since the disease began taking its toll, Sophia’s remarkable facial features prompted onlookers to take her photo, despite the Weavers’ best efforts to maintain their and her privacy.

After pictures of Sophia hit the internet, an abortion advocate appropriated the image to use in a Twitter message, claiming that Sophia should have been aborted before she was born. The Twitter ad has since been removed.

Natalie Weaver said that she spent weeks fighting with Twitter to get the post removed.

“When I saw that posted my heart dropped, it was incredibly painful,” Weaver told WHAS. She noted that while Twitter does have a policy which intends to protect disabled persons, it took weeks for images to be taken down.

“This is just about protecting my child and protecting others so they don’t receive hate online,” Weaver said.

Sophia has undergone 22 surgeries and is fed through a feeding tube. She also has daily seizures, choking spells and type one diabetes.

Natalie Weaver is a loud advocate for the disabled community, and is the co-founder of Advocates for Medically Fragile Kids NC.
