Former Republican Steve Schmidt railed against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the socialist Democrat who beat incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in a primary race Tuesday night, during an MSNBC interview Wednesday.
Schmidt trashed Ocasio-Cortez’s socialist ideals, insisting that she is engaging in “dishonest progressivism” and cannot possibly pay for her proposed policies.
“It signals a fast-shifting current to the left of the Democratic Party. And we already see that Cory Booker and others have settled on a strategy of what I call dishonest progressivism,” Schmidt said. “Everybody is going to have a job guaranteed by the federal government. Free daycare, free health care, free stuff, free education, free college education with no notion how to pay for it.”
“It’s naive!” anchor Stephanie Ruhle interjected.
“Explain to me like I’m a third grader how that’s any different than Trump saying, ‘We’re going to build a wall, and Mexico’s going to pay for it,'” he continued. “If you get into a dishonesty contest with Donald Trump, I suspect it’s like being in a 100-meter dash against Usain Bolt.”
