A California vice mayor is facing criticism from his constituents after calling for “Straight Pride American Month” in July.

“Now before anyone gets their pantyhose in a knot, this is not really legally anti anything; instead it’s pro-family; and proud to be a straight American, and me expressing a private opinion … So there,” Dixon Vice Mayor Ted Hickman wrote in a post on his website.

The post was published by the Independent Voice on June 29 in Hickman’s weekly column for the local newspaper.

“Now hundreds of millions of the rest of us can celebrate our month, peaking on July 4th as healthy, heterosexual, fairly monogamous, keep our kinky stuff to ourselves, Americans,” Hickman wrote. “We do it with our parades in every state and county in this country, with families celebrating together … We ARE different from them … We work, have families (and babies we make), enjoy and love the company (and marriage) of the opposite sex, and don’t flaunt our differences dressing up like fairies and prancing by the thousands in a parade.”

Hickman’s post caused public outrage in his hometown and within the LGBTQ community. Protesters created a Recall Ted Hickman Facebook page that has garnered over 1,200 likes since it was created on June 30, in direct opposition to his leadership role in the community, The Mercury News reported Monday.

“I do represent [all Dixon residents] equally on government issues, not their personal habits,” Hickman told The Reporter. “I’m not elected to represent their lifestyle.”

In regards to the call on Facebook for a recall, he says it isn’t likely, but he is up for re-election in November, according to The Hill. He mentioned that critics of his column should ignore what he wrote if they don’t like it, Hickman told The Reporter Sunday.

“While I do not approve of such an article — in my belief we are all American U.S. citizens where sexual (preference) shouldn’t play a role — I do believe in a person’s freedom of speech even when I don’t like what they are saying,” Dixon Mayor Thom Bogue said in a statement on June 30.
