CNN chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said on “New Day” Friday the key to the Russia investigation hinges on the credibility of President Donald Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen.
Toobin was talking about Donald Trump Jr.’s discussions with Russia about Hillary Clinton in June of 2016 and said it’s possible the president knew about their Trump Tower meeting in advance.
“Let’s of course pause at that [Cohen’s] credibility is in question,” Toobin said. “But if Cohen is telling the truth about [the Trump Tower meeting], it completely changes our understanding of what Donald Trump’s role was. Donald Trump senior, the President of the United States, in the relationship between his campaign and Russia.” (RELATED: CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin Predicts A Dozen States Will Ban Abortion After Trump Replaces Kennedy)
Toobin said proof that President Trump knew of a Trump Tower meeting between the his campaign and the Russian government would change the entire investigation and disrupt the White House’s narrative.
“This meeting in Trump Tower is the clearest example we have so far of a direct connection between the Russian government and the Trump campaign,” Toobin added.
“The party line has been … that Donald Trump did not know about this meeting. Now that’s always been somewhat suspect. We have the famous email … Donald Trump junior saying, ‘if it’s true, that is this offer of help from the Russian government, I love it.’ Would he really not have told his father about that?”
