Suspended New England Patriots receiver Josh Gordon might be back sooner than expected.

According to a report Sunday from Ian Rapoport, the electric receiver is doing well in rehab for substance abuse issues and could return to the team by the start of training camp. He’s currently on an indefinite suspension.

I’m actually stunned that there is any chance Gordon could be back that soon. He’s repeatedly been suspended, and it sounds like the NFL is getting ready to just give him another chance.

That wouldn’t appear to be the smartest precedent to set. Now, Gordon is extremely talented, and we all know that the more talent you have, the more space you get when it comes to making mistakes. (RELATED: Roger Goodell Says The NFL Is Focused On Helping Josh Gordon Return To Football)

Most importantly, Gordon just needs to get his life on the correct path. As I’ve said before, football won’t matter one bit if he’s not clean and sober.

If he can’t get his mental and substance abuse issues straight, then whether or not he’s playing football will be the least of his concerns.

Hopefully, the Patriots and the NFL are able to get Gordon the help he so clearly needs. He can figure out everything else after that.

Right now, the only thing anybody should be concerned about is getting him clean and on the straight and narrow.
