Republican Utah Sen. Mitt Romney sparked distress among Twitter users Tuesday when he posted a video showing the unique way he blows out his birthday candles.

Romney’s staff gifted him with a birthday cake made out of Twinkies, which he says are his favorite snack, and sang “Happy Birthday” to him. A video of the surprise shows Romney individually taking out each candle and blowing it out just a few inches from his face, rather than just blowing out the candles on the cake all at once. Twitter users reacted viscerally to Romney’s method of blowing out his candles.

“You may think you don’t need to watch this video of Mitt Romney getting a cake made out of twinkies, but otherwise how will you find out what completely bizarre way Mitt Romney blows out birthday candles,” one user wrote.

“Mitt Romney is a deeply weird dude,” journalist Bradford Pearson wrote.

Paul Harris, an editor for The Guardian, joked that Romney is “an alien still learning to be ‘human’ and forgetting some of the basics.”

Romney has struggled with relatability issues during his various political campaigns. In 2007, Romney was accused of transporting his dog on the roof of his car for 12 hours. And this past May, he shared that his “favorite meat is hot dog” and his “second favorite meat is hamburger.”
