San Franciscans chose to ditch the city at incredible rates in 2020. Polls indicate it’s due not to the coronavirus pandemic, but to steep drops in quality of life.
The year 2020 saw a nearly 200% increase in the number of Californians choosing to leave the Bay Area, and unlike previous years, they aren’t being replaced by people moving into the city. The number of new residents moving into the city in the final nine months of 2020 was 21% lower than the same period in 2019. Some experts have sought to blame the exodus on the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused many people who were able to work from home to move away.
